When I picked up The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna, I was a bit skeptical about whether or not I would enjoy it. But it turns out that this book is one of the best ones I have read this year. This book follows witches living among other people and having to keep their magic a secret. So, when Mika Moon, a witch, is offered to “teach three young witches magic” by a random old man on the internet, she is mystified. But she soon falls into a world of happiness because she finds a place where she belongs.
Mika teaches three little girls at the “Nowhere House” that inhabits a couple, Ken and Ian, the housekeeper, Lucy and the devilishly handsome librarian, Jamie. She teaches the three young foster girls there and soon creates unbreakable relationships with everyone there.
This book does complex relationships the best, Mika’s relationship with her foster witch caretaker is strained, but she can’t do anything about it. Mika’s relationship with the three girls is strange, but they get over it. Mandanna does a great job at roping in her readers, so we are a lot more vulnerable to the characters’ feelings. This book is a great example of the found-family trope, which I love.
Also, Mika and Jamie share a romantic bond that is written so beautifully that it brought me to tears. Both Mika and Jamie are amazing people who have their own personal issues that they have trouble getting over. They face some difficulties letting the other in, even while blatantly crushing on each other. This not only leads to some very tension-filled scenes, but also sweet moments that will put a smile on anyone’s face.
This book is perfect for lovers of magical realism: me.
