By Stephenie Meyer
3 Stars
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is an easy-read young adult novel that sucked readers into a modern romance between a teenager and a vampire. The book is situated in Forks High School, Washington. The story revolves around Bella Swan, who, at the age of 17 years, relocates to Forks to stay with her father, where she develops an instant obsession with the mysterious Edward Cullen.
Meyer so easily weaves in the normal everyday details of high school life with the aura of fascination that surrounds vampires. The narrative is strong, in large part from the point of view of Bella, who immerses the reader in this emotional journey. She is a typical teen but likable. Another character is Edward—beautiful yet to himself dangerous. A romantic hero with a dark secret, as Meyer calls him.
It builds up to the kind of chemistry that does, and how the relationship is described vividly and elaborately. The way Meyer describes their relationship shows how tender love is.
CRITICISMS: In my opinion, the story moves very slowly throughout the plot, and it isn't a very complex one that keeps the interest of all readers. The depth may be lacking in some characters, like Bella Swan, focusing mostly on her relationship with Edward and her clumsiness.
However, Twilight ties elements of romance, suspense, and fantasy into one of the stronger books in the young adult genre. Identity, love, and sacrifice are themes speaking to readers of any age. Surely, the critics have not been kind to the book, but it has called for millions of readers and created a box office franchise, if not one with a long-lasting impact on pop culture. Be it supernatural fiction or romance, Twilight gives you beautiful story content.
